Kegs for Kids: A Craft Beer Tasting Party

Kegs For Kids: It’s not what you think. Yes, there will be stand-out, one-of-a-kind kegs from more than 30 different brewers on ice at our Roasting Garage on Sept. 25.

But the kegs are only for the kids insomuch as funds from this event will be delivered to Peirce Elementary in Andersonville, a Chicago Public School (CPS). And the kegs, they are one-of-a-kind; many are being created just for Kegs for Kids.

The tasting public will receive a sheet right off the bat with the beers and descriptions, and then can choose to taste them in order or skip around. Did we mention unlimited sampling?

Basically, our co-owners, Jeff and Tony Dreyfuss, have teamed up with Hopleaf owners Michael and Louise Roper to support the school in hopes of keeping local friends/patrons local instead of exiting to the suburbs when their kids reach a certain age.

“We live in Andersonville and own a business here,” says Michael Roper. “There’s no such thing as a healthy neighborhood that doesn’t have good schools. We want to create an environment that’s nice for doing business and kids who are engaged in school and learning tend not to be the ones spray painting the back of my building, etching my glass or breaking into the place.

“It’s looking at the big picture; we all need these kids to be good citizens and that happens by offering them a quality education.” Note: The Ropers don’t have children in attendance at the school, but have made Peirce Elementary the primary recipient of their charity work. “It’s just something we believe in,” he says.

Come prepared to purchase some other cool stuff for a cause at the auction, like special large-format beers, gift certificates, possibly a Colorado ski trip and more. There will also be live music; we’ll update you when confirmed.

A LAST WORD ON THE “WHY” OF THIS EVENT: “At Hopleaf, Peirce has been our charity for years. For years, we wrote checks to lots of groups and then decided, rather than be piecemeal about our giving, why don’t we give all of our money to one entity and have it be something local where we can see the results. This is a public school in our neighborhood doing a great job, but, like all schools, lacks funding for special programs, so we’ve been doing benefits and giving donations for 5-6 years and decided to do a big event because of funding cuts for CPS…things like their art department is completely dependent on private donations now, so we’ve been funding their art department for awhile. This isn’t the only thing we’ll do for Peirce this year, just the biggest thing.” — Michael Roper
