Brew Diligence Day Three: Homemade Syrups

By: Jessie Kennedy, Photos By Dylan Gephart

Welcome to Brew Diligence, our at-home coffee education series.

With many beloved coffee shops temporarily closed, a lot of people may be missing their go-to lattes. While brewed coffee at home is delicious, there’s something special about a sweet coffee treat with your favorite flavors and hot milk.

Luckily, it’s super easy to make your own syrups for flavoring your at-home coffee just like we do at the cafe. All you’ll need is sugar, hot water, and an extract such as vanilla, hazelnut, or coconut. You can even use tea!

Basic Syrup From an Extract

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 tbsp extract of your choice

  1. Bring the water to a boil and pour into a heat proof container.
  2. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
  3. Stir in the extract

Voila! Your very own cafe-quality flavored syrup. Store refrigerated for one month.

Basic Syrup From Tea or Herbs

Some of our favorite syrups flavors come from herbs and teas. In this example, we’re using earl grey tea, but you can also use lavender, peppermint, chamomile, rose petal, rosemary, lemon rind, jasmine, chai, you name it!

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 heaped tbsp tea or dried botanical (adjust to taste, some delicate teas may require more, some botanicals, like lavender, need less)

  1. Bring water to a boil. Pour into a heat proof container and add the tea. Steep 5 minutes. Adjust the steep time to your desired strength.
  2. Strain out the tea leaves, reserving the tea.
  3. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.

Store for up to one month in the fridge.

Don’t stop at coffee! Syrups make a great addition to any sweet treat or drink. Think cakes, cookies, smoothies, hot chocolate or cocktails.

There you have it. You might not be able to enjoy the perfectly steamed milk and latte art of your favorite baristas, but with these tips you can bring some cafe flavor to your home-brewed coffee. Need a coffee restock? Take 20% off with code DRINKFROMHOME.
