What the heck is a peaberry?

What is a peaberry?

Great question, typically you’ll find two coffee beans butted against each other at the center of every coffee cherry. This is what gives them their characteristic rounded on one side flat on the other appearance. A strange thing happens to approximately 5% of the world’s coffee beans though. In these rare instances a coffee bean develops all alone in the cherry. Without an annoying sibling to flatten one side out you get the most adorable little round bean. In addition to being round, peaberries are typically smaller, denser and many claim sweeter. Farmers will frequently separate them out from the rest of their coffee for sale as their own special lot but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be on the lookout for one in your regular bag of coffee too!
