Brew Diligence Day Two: Cleaning That Icky Equipment

Welcome to Brew Diligence, our at-home coffee education series.

Many of us are finding ourselves brewing more coffee than usual at home, or digging deep within our cabinets to bust out The Coffee Maker That Time Forgot. Giving your brewer a deep clean will keep it running smoothly and keep your coffee tasting its best.

How to Clean an Automatic Coffee Maker

NOTE: This method can also be applied to Keurig coffee makers. Follow the steps without a pod in place.

Supplies:
Distilled white vinegar
Dish soap & water

  1. Remove the basket and discard any coffee grounds left over.
  2. Take off all the removable parts and wash them with soap and water.
  3. Replace the clean parts and place a paper filter in the basket.
  4. Fill the water reservoir with equal parts vinegar and water.
  5. Press the button for a full cycle into the empty carafe.
  6. Stop the cycle half way through, and let stand for 20 minutes. Turn the machine back on to complete the cycle.
  7. Dump out the carafe of vinegar water and fill the reservoir with clean water.
  8. Run two more cycles of clean water to flush out any leftover vinegar.

If the carafe is still dirty, there are a few ways to clean it further. Either add vinegar and allow to soak overnight, or try a commercial coffee cleaner like Joe Glo or Cafiza. After using any kind of cleaner, wash with soap and water, and rinse thoroughly before use.
